A new war memorial has been unveiled by the New Zealand Governor General on Mauke in the Cook Islands.

The memorial has been established to remember those from Mauke who served in the world wars and other conflicts around the world.

About 500 men from the Cook Islands volunteered their services in the First World War, with many of them enlisting with the Maori Pioneer Battalion from New Zealand.

The Governor General, Lieutenant General Sir Jerry Mateparae, who was on a brief visit to the Cook Islands, told those at the unveiling, that the memorial is a testament to the dedication Mauke has to the Realm of New Zealand and the Commonwealth.

"As the Governor General in and over the Realm of New Zealand I dedicate this memorial to all those people from Mauke who have served in our forces so far and who have served in our forces so far away from home."
