A pro-independence activist in the remote Indonesian province of West Papua says a group of people arrested on October the 19th are still held by police.

The 14 were commemorating the anniversary of the Third Papuan People's Congress, at which around 3000 people gathered to elect a president of the self-proclaimed Republic of West Papua.

An activist, Yoab Syatfle, says the group in Biak town met at a hall to pray and then peacefully demonstration outside.

He says the police and the Indonesian Government had banned any demonstration marking what it considers is an act of separatism.

He says the banned Morning Star flag was not raised, and people should be able to march peacefully.

"They gathered at one of the halls and they wanted to worship and pray, and after they worshipped they went to rally in Biak town but police came and arrested them."

Yoab Syatfle says they have been interrogated and tortured and are still held by police.
