The Vanuatu Police Force, the Vanuatu Mobile Force and the Police Maritime Wing, have accumulated a debt of nearly 850 thousand US dollars and salaries could be threatened.
The debt covers a period of 12 months with most of the expenses relating to telecommunications.
The Treasury Department says it is the first time the Police Force has recorded this level of overspending in a one year period one year.
Local reports say there are doubts there will be sufficient funding to meet the salaries of officers for the rest of this year.
The monthly police salary bill ranges up to 214-thousand US dollars.
