12:36 pm on 29 October 2013

Fiji conceded two late tries but it wasn't enough to prevent a convincing 32-14 victory over Ireland in their Rugby League World Cup opener in Rochdale on Tuesday.

Akuila Uate scored the first of his three tries in the ninth minute to help the Bati lead 12-4 at the break, with the only blemish coming when Eloni Vunakece was sent to the sin bin.

Kevin Naiqama and Korbin Sims also crossing the chalk for Fiji, who are the first Pacific nation to win at this year's World Cup.

It doesn't get any easier however with tournament favourites Australia next up this weekend.
