2:44 pm on 30 October 2013

The police in Papua New Guinea say the rape of a six-year-old girl is a shocking incident and they will be taking strong action.

The police media relations officer, Superintendent Dominic Kakas, says four men and one woman have been arrested in relation to the attack.

Mr Kakas says he understands the child was raped by at least one man after a bus crew abducted her in Gerehu.

"It is something that we are really shocked and really stunned as to how this could have happened. You know, what we have always been telling people here, we have been advising them that they just have to be careful and make sure that they are aware of the whereabouts of their children at all times. This was a very unfortunate incident and we would like to actually prevent such from happening again."

Dominic Kakas says the child fainted at the police station after reporting the attack and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The police are awaiting the medical report and investigations are continuing.
