More than 48 thousand teachers in Papua New Guinea are to get ten percent increases in their salaries and allowances from the beginning of next year.
This will take the base salary for first year teachers to just over 7 thousand US dollars.
The chairman of the Teaching Service Commission, Baran Sori, says teachers are the back bone of the country.
He says the increases recognise the work pressure, hardship, inconvenience and extra-curricular activities expected of teachers.
Baran Sori says the salary packages are also designed to encourage bright grade 12 graduates enter the teachers training colleges.
