The Cook Islands hopes of qualifying for the Rugby League World Cup knockout rounds have taken an early hit after being beaten 32-20 by the United States in their opening Group C match on Thursday.

Scores were level at 10-all at half-time but the Tomohawks finished strongly, scoring six tries to four, with captain Joseph Paulo named man of the match.

Next up for the Kukis is a crossover match against Tonga on Wednesday morning.

The top placed team from Groups C and D qualify for the quarter finals, with the top three teams from Groups A and B also advancing.
