Leader of Samoa opposition party calls for ministers to stand down over incident

The leader of Samoa's opposition party says the ministers under investigation by the police should stand down.

Palusalue Fa'apo has called for the Ombudsman to take over the probe, after it emerged the police who filed a report against the ministers were also being investigated.

The police report says the deputy prime minister, Fonotoe Lauofo, instructed associate minister Muagututagata Peter Ah Him to drive away as police were trying to conduct a breath test.

The police say they suspected Muagututagata of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Palusalue says he wants to know why the ministers have not been charged.

"I am not confident in terms of the independence of the investigation by the police if the deputy prime minister and the associate minister are still in their position because I believe they've got the power and the privilege to interfere with the police investigation."

Palusalue Fa'apo says any other person in Samoa would have been arrested, charged and kept in a cell overnight.
