Fiji leader claims land tenure is secure

2:41 pm on 1 November 2013

The Fiji regime leader, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has told people in Serua that land is secure.

Speaking about his plans to form a party for elections promised for next year, Commodore Bainimarama accused unnamed politicians of misleading the people for their own gain.

According to Fijivillage, he says the issue of land being taken away from the land owners has been used by politicians and has led to the coups of 1987 and 2000.

His comment comes just days after the head of the now disbanded Constitution Commission, Yash Ghai, said there is no constitutional security for indigenous owners and communities over their land.

In an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Professor Ghai said land was safeguarded in the draft presented by the Commission last year, but the document was dumped by the regime in January.

He says with a sleight of hand, the provisions have been changed.
