Australian police have officially requested the assistance of the Fiji Police to investigate claims made by a wanted Australian conman, Peter Foster, that he is in Fiji.

The Fiji Times says Australian liaison officers have this week met the acting police commissioner, Ravi Narayan.

Last week, Foster evaded Australian authorities and told the Sunday Mail that he had left for Fiji using a false passport and would be seeking a Fiji protection visa.

Foster had been sentenced to three years' jail on two charges of contempt of court relating to his involvement in a scam.

Earlier this week, Fiji's Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, said Foster was not in Fiji.
