Reports from New Caledonia say the French navy has intercepted a Chinese trawler fishing illegally in its territorial waters.

The Nouvelles Caledoniennes newspaper says the vessel, which had a fishing licence for Vanuatu waters, carried 40 tonnes of tuna and four tonnes of shark, including fins.

The newspaper says the captain of the Hu Yu 911 was interrogated for 30 hours and claimed not have known that he was prohibited from fishing where he was stopped.

The captain has been forced to surrender his passport and will be in court in two weeks.

It is not clear what will happen to the 13 crew.
