All staff of a New Caledonian public bus company have observed a one-day work stoppage in response to a shooting attack in the Noumea area on Tuesday.
Carsud's 106 employees, including the company's director, stayed away from work after a passenger was injured by a bullet fired at the bus in a rural zone near Dumbea.
The bullet went through the bus and shattered a window.
An inquiry has been launched to determine whether the bus was targetted or if the bullet was accidentally fired by a hunter.
The incident comes as the French government is poised to tighten gun ownership rules in New Caledonia after an outcry over a recent series of fatal shootings.
Last month, a teenager died after a man fetched a rifle and started shooting people in Noumea.
