An escaped prisoner is suspected to have been involved in the near-fatal stabbing of a businessman at Palisi on Thursday night.

The businessman, whose name is withheld, is recovering at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital.

A relative told the Samoa Observer the businessman suffered multiple stab wounds to his back and stomach.

The stabbing occurred when the businessman reacted to a thief who broke into his home.

The relative said the man chased the thief and when he caught him against the fence, the thief turned around, pulled out a knife and attacked the homeowner.

Last week, the police released details of Peika Pesaleli who they said escaped from Tafa'igata on Tuesday.

Pesaleli, is serving time for burglary and theft
