Sport: PNG confident ahead of first T20 World Cup qualifier

Papua New Guinea are hoping for a case of second time lucky in their bid to qualify for next year's Twenty20 Cricket World Cup.

The Barramundi's are one of 16 countries competing in the United Arab Emirates for one of six places at next year's tournament.

PNG fell short at the same stage two years ago but have been impressive in their warm-up fixtures this week, beating Uganda and the top-ranked associate country, Ireland.

The General Manager of Cricket PNG, Greg Campbell, says the next fortnight is the culmination of a lot of hard work.

"It's been five years in the making, going back to when Andy Bichel coached and Bill Leane was the CEO. It's been a lot of these players - people don't realise - what's the real life in their home country PNG. It is a very hostile place to live and these boys put their lives on the line. It's a reward that's coming to fruition - they're natural sportsman, they're natural cricketers - and they're actually starting to get the fruits of it."

The former England keeper Geraint Jones has top scored in both warm up up games and the General Manager of Cricket PNG, Greg Campbell, says he's brought a lot to the team.

He's been magnificent and we'll play him as long as he wants to and he's performing. He's got another 38 today in the T20 - he just passes so much experience and knowledge and confidence to the guys that can do the job. He fits in real well, the guys love him, he's rooming with one of our fast bowlers - talking to him every night - he's just a credit to himself, Geraint.

PNG's first group match is against Kenya on Friday.
