Commonwealth calls for Fiji to form electoral commission

1:39 pm on 18 November 2013

Heads of government of Commonwealth countries have urged Fiji to set up an independent national election commission rapidly.

In a statement at their summit in Sri Lanka, they say such a commission should oversee the conduct of credible and inclusive elections on a level playing field, promised for next year.

The Commonwealth has offered support to the electoral preparations, including observers.

Fiji was suspended in September 2009 after the regime leader, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, reneged on a promise to return the country to democracy.

It is not known when Fiji will set up an electoral commission.

The website Fijivillage says the Commonwealth Games Federation president Prince Tunku Imran of Malaysia has called for Fiji's suspension to be lifted before July so that Fiji can take part in the Commonwealth Games.
