Fiji describes Commonwealth as irrelevant

5:11 pm on 19 November 2013

Fiji's foreign minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, has told the Fiji Sun his country is not over eager to rejoin the Commonwealth because he says the body has become irrelevant.

He was reacting to a resolution at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting which ended in Colombo on Sunday with a call for a rapid establishment of an independent national election commissionin Fiji.

Fiji was suspended in September 2009 after the regime leader, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, reneged on a promise to return the country to democracy.

Commonwealth leaders have urged Fiji to hold credible and inclusive elections on a level playing field, while offering to send observers.

The Fiji Sun quotes Ratu Inoke as saying Fiji is not asking to return to the Commonwealth fold.

He says the leaders' comments are not helping his government's bid to move the country forward and to make a democratic return.
