3:03 pm on 20 November 2013

The National University of Samoa will begin construction of a maritime training centre at the Mulinu'u Peninsula next month.

The acting vice chancellor, Tuimanu'asina Emma Kruse-Vaai, says the new facility, which will be funded under the China Grant Aid Project, will take up to 20 months to build.

She says the maritime centre will be accommodated on the same site as the Faculty of Marine Science and Environmental Research Centre.

The Samoa Government newspaper Le Savali reports the Chinese grant of more than 13 million US dollars will also pay for the Loto Taumafai School for children with special needs and Siumu primary school.
