Calls in American Samoa for Govt to keep stats on unemployed

10:31 am on 22 November 2013

The Department of Commerce in American Samoa has recommended that the government set up a mechanism to record statistics on unemployment.

A report for the final quarter of the fiscal year 2013 by the department says there is currently no system in place to document the number of people who are unemployed.

It also notes that the same goes for documenting businesses that have closed down.

The department says there should be an agency within the hiring agency of the government, for business and unemployed people to report to for statistical purposes.

It is recommending that their research and statistical division devise a survey or a tool to collect unemployment data.

It also recommends the establishment of an Unemployment Agency with the Department of Human Resources.
