The United Arab Emirates has funded the construction of a solar farm to the people of Vava'u in Tonga's northern islands.

The 500 photovoltaic panels and battery storage technology has been integrated into the island's diesel power station.

It will provide about 13 percent of Vava'u's power needs as Tonga strives to cut it dependence on diesel to 50 percent by 2020.

Tonga's Energy Road Map worked with Abu Dhabi based renewable energy company, Masdar, to develop the solar farm through a grant provided by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development.

The prime minister, Lord Tu'ivakano, says the solar farm is a symbol of the closeness of the Royal Families of both countries and their people.

He says it will not only benefit the people of Vava'u but will strengthen Tonga's bilateral relations with the Government and the people of the UAE.
