Fiji's Cloud 9 to reopen in new location

The owner of a Fiji floating tourist attraction the government closed down at the beginning of the month says it will re-open in the next two weeks in a better location off Nadi.

Cloud 9, a bar and restaurant which sat on a twin-hulled pontoon, opened in the middle of the year near a world-renowned surfing area known as Cloudbreak in western Viti Levu.

Tony Philp says despite it obtaining all the necessary permits before opening, the Attorney General said it was in breach of the Surfing Areas Decree 2010 and shut it down.

Mr Philp says there is uncertainty in the Decree's interpretation, and that the government should have given notice before shutting the restaurant down.

But he says he is now working with the Attorney General on the relocation.

"At the end of the day, I think the government had to make a decision. You know, it probably wasn't the right decision to just abruptly shut us down as they did. But I have to look at it in a positive way. The new location we are looking at is a lot better than the previous location. If we get to consolidate this new location in the next week or so, in the months that follow we will trade even better than we have in the past 5 months."

Tony Philp says he cannot disclose where the new Cloud 9 will be, as it is still being negotiated.
