American Samoa's Agriculture Dept pushes for local products over imports

American Samoa's Agriculture Director is encouraging businesses to buy local products instead of imported goods.

Lealao Mel Purcell says crops showcased at the Territorial Farm Fair last week indicated an abundance of staples in Tutuila and Manu'a and that the interest in farming has grown.

He says a good number of those who submitted entries for the fair this year were new farmers or those who began farming their land in the last several years.

Lealao Mel Purcell says the department will be working on a project to encourage local businesses to buy from farmers instead of importing staples such as banana and taro.
