Almost 300 wheelchairs have been donated to the Ministry of Health in Tonga.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints made the donation to help patients at Vaiola Hospital.

Radio Tonga reports that the medical superintendent of Vaiola Hospital, Dr Sais Piukala, says it is an important donation that will help people who are paralysed or have lost a limb to diabetes.

The church says it has organised free training for patients on how to use the wheelchairs.

It says it is thrilled to be able to help the people of Tonga in a small way.

The wheelchairs are worth more than 60,000 US dollars.
