Australia sends 7-year-old asylum seeker to Nauru detention camp

A seven-year old child is the latest asylum seeker taken to the Australian run detention camps on Nauru.

This comes despite last week's comprehensive report from the United Nations refugee agency, the UNHCR, calling for an end to the transfer of children unless conditions are markedly improved.

Little specific information is being made available but a brief media release says a group of 20, mainly Iraqis and Iranians, has been flown from Christmas Island in the past few days.

The group includes five children, the youngest of whom is the seven-year-old.

There are now 687 asylum seekers on the island.

Most of them are family groups.
