Japan is the latest country to offer to help Fiji hold elections promised for next year.

Fijivillage reports the offer was made by the Japanese ambassador to Fiji.

The most substantial assistance has been pledged by Papua New Guinea.

No exact date has been set for the election but it is scheduled to be held before the end of September.

The regime reneged on its previous promise to hold it in 2009 and Fiji was subsequently suspended from the Pacific Islands Forum and the Commonwealth.
