A French Polynesian court has ordered the French state to re-examine a compensation claim of a woman who says she is suffering fom cancer because she was exposed to fallout from the French nuclear weapons tests.

Her case had been rejected by the defence minister's compensation commission in May, saying the risks posed by the tests was negligible.

The court however says the response was given without researching her circumstances properly and this is now to be done within six months.

The woman in question is 43 years old and living in Rikitea, she was exposed to the tests until the age of four.

France has rejected almost all claims so far, prompting calls to amend the compensation law.
