New outdoor area at Niue hospital thanks to NZ teen

A New Zealand teenager is raising over 33,000 US dollars to design and construct a communal outdoor space for eldery patients of Foou Hospital in Niue.

The hospital was rebuilt after Cyclone Heta destroyed the old one in 2004, but Masterton 17-year-old, Matt Wilson, says the elderly share rooms and are largely restricted to their beds.

He says the new area will consist of a kitchen, a laundry, a toilet, outdoor beds for the patients to use during the day and a large shaded, dining and socialising area.

"They're just lacking a place for them to go, other than their rooms. What we're planning to do is build it here in Masterton, de-assembling it in panels, flat-packing it into a shipping container, shipping it over and then reassembling it over there."

Matt Wilson says the local high school will help him with landscaping and re-assembling stages.

He says he has already raised over 20,000 US dollars but is hoping for another 12 thousand US dollars before the project gets underway in April.
