New American Samoa cannery about to hire first workers

3:00 pm on 19 December 2013

Samoa Tuna Processors, which is building a new cannery in American Samoa, says it will start hiring some workers over the next few weeks for its fresh/frozen fish operation.

A company spokesperson, Ian Boatwood, says the building for the fish processing facility is nearly complete with the electrical system the main feature still to finish.

But it will be another 12 months before major hiring for the cannery begins.

A vice president of parent company Tri Marine, Dan Sullivan, says a delay of nearly two years in getting a permit for the construction of the sea wall means production is now not likely to start until the beginning of 2015.
