American Samoa govt not able to help fishing fleet fuel bill

4:33 pm on 27 December 2013

The American Samoa Government says is not in a position to subsidise fuel for the longline fishing fleet.

Longline Services Incorporated, a local fishing company, says local owners of albacore fishing boats are all planning on selling up in the new year because it's no longer economic.

The company says it's impossible to compete with the influx of Chinese fleets, which enjoy government subsidies.

The executive assistant to Governor Lolo Moliga, Iulogologo Joseph Pereira, says the government lacks the financial resources to subsidise fuel for the fishing vessels.
