NZers with Pacific links get New Year's Honours

New Zealanders with close links to the Pacific have been recognised for their services in the New Year's Honours list.

That includes Dr Kiki Maoate, who has been named an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his work in Pacific health.

Among his many roles, Dr Kiki Maoate, is the chair of the Pasifika Medical Association and the director of the Pacific Island Project, which provides health services to the Pacific. Another awardee, Laurel Taufauata, has received the Queen's Service Order for her contribution to health and the Pacific community. Mrs Taufauata has been a member of the women's group Pacifica since it was established in 1976. Meanwhile, Tutagaloa Tutose Tuhipa (Member of the NZ order of Merit) has been honoured for her involvement with Pacific language and cultural education. And Rita Taimalietane Fatialofa-Patolo (MNZM) , who has represented New Zealand in netball and softball, has been recognised for her services to sport. In addition, a prominent figure in Niue, Hafeiki Vailitama (MNZM), has been honoured for his services to Niue following his work in education and local and national politics.
