Land dispute results in water shortages in Honiara

7:08 pm on 6 January 2014

The water authority in Solomon Islands says communities in Honiara will experience water shortages if a dispute between a landowners group and the Commissioner of Lands is not resolved immediately.

Solomon Water says a group of landowners up-stream from the Kongulai Water Source illegally shut off part of the source over Christmas.

The Kongulai Water Source provides more than half of Honiara's water supply.

Solomon Water says it is likely that Independence Valley, Rifle Range, parts of Rove and Kola Ridge will be the worst affected, but it cannot guarantee 24 hour water supply to anywhere in Honiara.

It says it will do its best to maximise the water resources it has, but will be unable to meet the demands of the community unless the landowners end the dispute.
