Residents on Ha'apai in Tonga have begun preparing for the effects of tropical cyclone Ian after an alert was issued for the island group.

According to Radio Tonga News, people are making sure their homes can withstand the onset of the cyclone, such as closing up their windows and securing their roofs with extra timber.

Local media say the biggest concern in Ha'apai is the damage a cyclone can do to their fruit trees, especially mango and breadfruit which are currently in season.
