Papua New Guinea police have tightened security for the National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop and his family following threats over the ban on betel nut sales in Port Moresby.

The ban came into effect at the beginning of the week after a seven-day grace period.

The newspaper, The National, says Mr Parkop received a death threat via a text message on his mobile phone last weekend.

Mr Parkop says he won't be deterred from implementing the ban.

He has been at loggerheads with disgruntled vendors and suppliers over the ban, which they claimed was cutting off their only source of income and their livelihood.
