Fiji to release electoral legislation soon

2:14 pm on 10 January 2014

Fiji's Minister Responsible for Elections, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the electoral legislation will be ready soon for the polls promised for September.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum has told FBC News that an expert from Canada, sent by the European Union, was working on it.

He says she has put together a draft and together with government, they are fine-tuning the document.

He also says the Supervisor of Elections post will be filled as soon possible.

The post has been vacant since late 2008 when Felicity Heffernan quit.

She only held the job briefly because shortly after her appointment the regime reneged on its promise to hold elections in 2009.
