Cook Islands airport on Atiu to be upgraded

3:01 pm on 15 January 2014

The airport on Atiu in the Cook Islands is to get a 3.3 million US dollar upgrade in the next few months as part of a long-term plan to boost the island's tourism economy.

The MP for Atiu, Nandi Glassie, told Cook Islands news that starting in late February or early March, the runway will be completely sealed.

He also added that improvements will also be made to roads between the airport and key settlements.

Nandi Glassie says the work will also provide employment opportunities for local labourers.

Air Rarotonga currently flies only its 15-seater planes to the island.

Mr Glassie says upgrading the runway may allow the airline to land its larger 34-seater Saab aircraft there.
