The electricity company Tonga Power Limited says it estimates it will cost at least 1.6 million US dollars to rebuild the entire power distribution network in the Ha'apai islands following cyclone Ian.

The Acting chief executive officer of the company, Steven 'Esau says the cyclone has destroyed over 90 percent of power lines and poles in the island group when it hit last Saturday.

Matangi Tonga reports six teams of linesmen are now working to rebuild the high-voltage lines located on the main roads, while another team is working to rebuild the low-voltage line that connects the service lines to homes.

Tonga Power Limited has about 1,000 power consumers in Ha'apai.
