Threat to take American Samoa Governor to court over budget changes

9:14 am on 16 January 2014

At the start of American Samoa's new legislative session there's been a call to take Governor Lolo Moliga to court for not following the budget law.

Senator Soliai Tuipine says the Fono should move on what it has already approved and that is to take the Governor to court over the line item veto.

At the end of the last legislative session, the Senate voted to take legal action against the governor when he changed figures in the approved budget for the Fono.

Lawmakers felt the Governor was carrying out a function which rested with the Fono and that is appropriating funds for the Government.

Soliai says in order for the Government to move forward it's necessary to get a ruling from the court on the issue.

The Senate President Gaoteote Palaie says the documents are nearly ready and the case will be filed for the benefit of the territory.
