Vanuatu capital warns of dengue risks

4:17 pm on 21 January 2014

Health authorities in the Vanuatu capital have started a mass campaign to stop the spread of dengue fever.

The campaign in Port Vila involves the clean-up of mosquito breeding sites and educating people about the risk of contracting dengue.

Last week, the ministry of health set up a special unit to deal with the dengue outbreak.

The leader of the campaign, Dr Laurence Boe, says since the first case of dengue was recorded three weeks ago, the number of residents who have reportedly been infected by the virus has exceeded 20.

He says there could be a huge outbreak because the population has been free of the virus during the last 20 years and that may have reduced the chance for people to become immune to the virus.
