The New Zealand foreign minister has announced the release of a further 1.2 million US dollars to help cyclone-hit Tonga.

Murray McCully says New Zealand will provide equipment and materials to help restore the electricity network on the affected islands of Ha'apai.

He says Cyclone Ian, which struck nearly two weeks ago, caused significant damage to electricity infrastructure, including power lines and transformers.

Today's announcement brings New Zealand's support for the cyclone response to more than 1.5 million US dollars.
