Mynahs trigger American Samoa air rifle debate

7:20 am on 24 January 2014

The American Samoa legislature is to debate bill that would allow the import, sale and registration of air rifles in the territory.

The proposal is being sponsored by a representative, Gafatasi Afalava, in an apparent response to the nuisance caused by mynah birds.

He was approached by two brothers from Malaeloa who wanted to use air rifles to get rid of mynah birds but found out that the rifles are not allowed under local law.

The politician says the brothers have convinced him that from their research air rifles do not pose any risk to humans but can effectively kill mynah birds.
