Sport: Sacked rugby coach still wants Fiji job

The sacked Fiji rugby coach, Inoke Male, still wants to coach the team and says the reasons for his dismissal do not stack up.

Inoke Male and four other employees had their contracts terminated on Monday.

It comes weeks after the International Rugby Board suspended direct funding of more than 1.5 million US dollars to the Union, citing its failure to agree to the implementation of key recommendations from a major review.

Inoke Male had been preparing teams for the upcoming Pacific Rugby Cup and Nations Cup tournaments and would still desperately love to be involved.

"Yes, especially because I've got the heart to coach Fiji because what they put in the termination letter is not relevant to what I've done. They had a dismal performance in 2011 [at the Rugby World Cup]. I've brought the level of Fiji Rugby from 16th to 11th. They have tried to terminate - they said it's a recommendation from their review, that I've not got enough experience to coach the international level".

Inoke Male says money was not a factor in his dismissal but thinks the Union wants to hire an overseas coach.
