The outgoing Papua New Guinea cricket coach Peter Anderson says achieving one day international status is a big deal.
The Barramundi's finished fourth in the 2015 World Cup qualifying tournament, after losing their final Super Six clash against Hong Kong on Thursday.
Their final placing lifts them to full ODI status alongside the United Arab Emirates, Scotland and Hong Kong, with the Netherlands, Kenya and Canada losing theirs.
Among the perks are a boost in funding from the International Cricket Council and the prospect of more regular and high profile matches.
Peter Anderson says the for a country like PNG, who don't play as many matches as they would like, it's a huge boost.
"I think it's massive. At this stage it's not sure exactly what's happening with how the ICC are going to do it. There are certainly massive discussions at present but in the past for making it [to the] top six you go to a high performance country. From that point of view it's a massive boost for Cricket PNG. I believe the Government has come out [and] are very very happy and I believe Mr O'Neill, the Prime Minister, has made a statement that they're certainly going to kick in some funds for Cricket PNG which is great for the players long term."
The UAE and Scotland secured the final two places at next summer's Cricket World Cup after finishing top of the qualifiers and will contest the tournament final tomorrow.
PNG's performances have lifted their world ranking three places to 16th.
