Fiji's Labour Party President says lack of election detail 'discouraging'

The president of Fiji's Labour Party says it is discouraging that key details about the promised elections are still to be released to the public.

Lavinia Padarath, who is a former minister for Women and Social Welfare, has just attended a workshop in Fiji aimed at encouraging more women in the Pacific to enter politics.

But Ms Padarath says it is not clear whether Fiji's elections will go ahead this year.

"The whole of Fiji is still in the dark. We have been promised elections by September this year. We are awaiting details but we are also hampered at the same time when Fiji has not been given the Electoral Decree to give us some detail on the direction, the way forward, in terms of the election process and that is discouraging."

Lavinia Padarath says the party is also waiting for the supervisor of elections to be announced.
