Efforts underway to get castaway home from Marshall Islands

Efforts are underway to get an El Salvadoran man home after he washed up in a boat on a Marshall Islands atoll last week.

The 37 year old shark fisherman, Jose Salvador Alvarenga, has given more details of his 13 thousand kilometre voyage from off the coast of Mexico where he says winds swept him off into the Pacific Ocean on a fishing trip in December 2012.

He says he tried to force raw meat into his teenage companion who couldn't bear the smell and kept vomiting, eventually dying four months into the trip.

Mr Alvarenga says the hardest time was when it didn't rain for three months and he had to drink his own urine.

Foreign Ministry officials in Majuro say they will be working with the U.S. Embassy on transit visas for Mr Albarenga to get home and they say Mexico's Manila-based Ambassador says he's prepared to pay for his air ticket.
