Police in New Caledonia say four people are missing after the territory was struck by heavy rain.

They say in Bourail, a six year old boy has been reported missing and in Kone, a man has gone missing.

They also say in Mont-Dore, near Noumea, two young people were carried away while trying to cross a river.

Search efforts have been unsuccessful.

The territory has had heavy rain linked to depression Edna passing nearby, which has now become a cyclone.

The system has triggered an orange cyclone alert in the north of the main island.
