Forum contact group on Fiji confirms Suva visit

5:20 am on 12 February 2014

The New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully has confirmed that the Pacific Islands Forum Ministerial Contact Group is to visit Fiji this week.

The two-day visit to Suva will commence on Friday.

The Forum group last visited last April, when it told the Fiji government of clear international expectations about the lead-up to planned elections.

Mr McCully says they will meet a range of groups and Fiji government representatives, to produce a report that would update Forum leaders on election developments which he describes as moving quickly.

"New Zealand has taken some steps to recognise the progress that has been made, we've eased some of the restrictions that have operated in the past. And I guess what Forum ministers will be looking to advise leaders on is an appropriate way of the region responding to elections should they be held and should they be deemed to be free and fair."
