Fiji's Ministry of Information has confirmed three people have died from the current outbreak of dengue fever.

Permanent Secretary Sharon Smith-Johns says outpatient areas of some hospitals have seen waves of patients at times.

She says all doctors and nurses have had their annual leave cancelled while authorities cope with the outbreak which has affected several thousand Fijians.

"We have two thousand five hundred cases of dengue throughout Fiji. Predominantly in the Suva area that's where at least it's been worst affected which is the central area in Suva. There's been three deaths from this outbreak."

Sharon Smith Johns says extra funding from the World Health Organisation and AusAid is supporting the public awareness campaigns and monitoring of the disease.
