Small islands in the Pacific are looking to boost their tourism numbers by preparing better for visiting cruise ships.

The South Pacific Tourism Organisation is running workshops starting on Thursday for the Micronesian islands of Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands and Christmas Island.

The CEO, Ilisoni Vuidreketi, says one aim is to improve on-shore services and products, so visitors can arrive with ease, and have plenty to do.

He says the workshops will be helping local tour operators deal with simple and practical details.

"Are there enough local buses and taxis that can go on short tours, and also how well-organised are facilities like, the bar facilities and toilet facilities on the ground."
