Storm evacuation centres now open in Fiji

7:27 pm on 27 February 2014

The Fiji Government says a number of evacuation centres are now open to provide shelter for people affected by several days of heavy rain.

The stormy weather is expected to intensify with the possibility that the tropical depression now hitting eastern and central parts of Viti Levu could become a cyclone.

The government's information service says 14 evacuation centres are now open in those zones.

It says a number of major roads remain closed by flooding or slips.
