UN Rapporteur to consult widely on violence issues in PNG

7:47 am on 3 March 2014

A United Nations expert on arbitrary killings has been invited by the Papua New Guinea government to advise how the country can solve its problems with violence.

The Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, Christof Heyns, from today is assessing the right to life in both law and practice in PNG.

Issues such as the newly re-imposed death penalty and the way people use the sorcery laws to kill with impunity will be examined.

A UN spokesperson in Port Moresby, Signe Poulsen, says Mr Heyns will speak with a wide cross section of Papua New Guineans.

"He will be talking to of course to government actors, police and judicial officials, but he will also be meeting with the families of victims, with civil society organisations and will travel to a number of locations within PNG and outside of Port Moresby in order to get a more comprehensive picture of the situation."
