Greens to move for Parliamentary inquiry into Manus incident

3:09 pm on 3 March 2014

The Australian Greens is adding its voice to calls for a rigorous parliamentary inquiry following the death of an asylum seeker at Papua New Guinea's Manus Island detention centre.

Unrest at the Australian-run camp last month left a 23-year-old Iranian man dead and more than 70 people injured.

The Greens' immigration spokesperson says an Australian Government review into the incident will lack independence and its terms of reference are too narrow.

Senator Sarah Hanson-Young says an independent inquiry will allow workers at the centre the legal protection to speak freely.

Ms Hanson-Young says the inquiry should consider the involvement and response of the Department of Immigration, Border Protection and Papua New Guinea police.

Meanwhile, a Papua New Guinea judge is to interview asylum seekers at the camp during his own investigation into their treatment.

Justice David Cannings has indicated a time frame of one month and says hearings will take place in Madang, Manus Island and Port Moresby.
